The AROVCC Board members and committee members have been very busy preparing for a wonderful new year. A few things that have been lined up include:
- Printing of our own ovarian educational brochure
- Distribution of the brochure to all Arkansas Area Health Education Centers and Arkansas Department of Health OB/Gyn offices. (AHEC’s are the primary educational outreach effort of UAMS and the principal means of decentralizing medical and other health professions education throughout the state)
- Preparation and planning for our 4th Annual Awareness Rally, 3rd Annual Survivors Luncheon (August 31) and 2nd Annual Artists for Ovaries (Sept 24).
Most recently we have had the opportunity to participate in Lilly’s Dim Sum Then Some ”One Day, One Community” – One Monday night a month, they feature a local charity and give 15% of their proceeds of the day to the featured group. Thank you all to everyone that came out and supported the AROVCC!!
A member of the AROVCC Board, Carrie Bumgardner (3-year ovarian cancer survivor) and her company Sassy Scraps is hosting a scrapbook retreat to benefit the Coalition.
“Crop Teal You Drop” will be held August 28 – 30, at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in Morrilton, Arkansas. The group wants to get the word out. Everyone knows that pink ribbons symbolize the fight against breast cancer, but not everyone is familiar with what the teal colored ribbons represent. The Winthrop Rockefeller Institute is a beautiful place to get away from it all and dive in to the hobby you love.
The starting cost for the weekend event is $175, or you can pay per day if you don’t want to stay the entire weekend. The cost includes snacks and meals. The balance must be paid in full by August 17, 2009. To download a registration form, or for more information visit their website at http://www.sassyscrapsonline.com
You don’t want to miss this!
The support for ovarian cancer managed to draw out Mr. Sunshine for a few hours on Saturday May, 9 – which allowed for a successful First Annual Hope Hike (Lisette C. Johnson Memorial Hike for Ovarian Cancer Education and Research) With over 60 hikers in attendance and over 100 virtual hikers, the Hike was able to raise over $2000. The money will be used for ovarian cancer research and education throughout the state of Arkansas.
Lisette’s family was in attendance and were truly touched by the support given to fight this deadly disease. Pictured below is a few of the local survivors in attendance.
Congratulations everyone! Thank you to all of the committee members that selflessly devoted their time!
Awareness in Arkansas is growing daily and we are excited about every step. The Arkansas Ovarian Cancer Coalition is proud to be a part of the first annual Lisette C. Johnson Memorial Hike for Ovarian Cancer Education and Research.
We would like to invite you to join us as we celebrate life and remember those who have battled this disease. We know it will be a fun-filled experience for the entire family.
We kindly ask that you do all you can to support this event to help fulfill our goal of educating the public, bringing forth awareness and supporting ovarian cancer research. You can find more information about the Hope Hike under Upcoming Events or go to thier website.
The AR Ovarian Cancer Coalition is proud to be a part of the UAMS Ovarian Cancer Retreat. Because of our success with our events on Sept. 9th, we were able to sponsor two tickets to the retreat!
The retreat is Sept. 27th at the UAMS Wintrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute from 7am-2:00pm. Please visit our upcoming events page for more information.
We will try to post every video we can on here for you to watch. Currently the only one that is excessible is on Ch. 11′s website. (You have to watch for a minute before the ovarian cancer segment comes on.) This one (above) features survivor Susan Gibson, from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Enjoy!
We had such an awesome turnout and can not thank everyone enough that gave us thier time for thier support.
