A little about Carrie Bumgardner. Carrie is an attorney at Hyden, Miron & Foster, PLLC - a law firm with offices in Little Rock, Conway and Hot Springs Village specializing in business, tax, and estate planning. She enjoys reading and traveling, but really LOVES spending time with her family…. eight neices and nephews fill her with a lot of love and joy. She lives in Benton, with her “pet child.” Her favorite food is Mexican, she “could eat it any day of the week, authentic or tex-mex, I have no preference.” Below is an introductory letter for our supporters to see Carrie & the Boards vision for 2012.
First, I want to thank you for entrusting me with the future of this great organization. More importantly, I want to thank you for being a supporter and friend of the Arkansas Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Without you, we would not be where we are today. I encourage you to get involved in 2012. There are many opportunities for volunteers – from active leaders to someone who only has time to help out an hour a month.
When the Board of Directors met to discuss the future of AROVCC, we implemented a growth plan. We have several great ideas and opportunities for educating Arkansans about ovarian cancer, but along with increased activity comes increased financial burden. Therefore, we started thinking of “out of the box” ideas for raising money and increasing awareness. We also made some hard decisions regarding past events. I hope what you will find is a new and improved organization that is striving to change the face of ovarian cancer.
Regarding our past events, in 2012 we will say goodbye to the Survivor’s Luncheon. We are eternally grateful to Governor Beebe and First Lady Ginger for opening their home to us and sharing their experience with ovarian cancer. However, it is time to increase survivor connections and create a community of survivors who are helping each other cope, recuperate and thrive. Our first Survivor event will be a picnic during and/or after Hope Hike. We need volunteers to help organize and carry out this event.
We will still host an awareness rally, just not at the capital. Instead we will “Rally at the River.” We propose to have a massive teal balloon release in downtown Little Rock followed by a gathering for survivors and supporters. We need volunteers to help organize and carry out this event.
We will continue to host Artists for Ovaries, but we will implement new guidelines for submitting artwork. We will look at different avenues for increasing attendance and revenue at the auction. We need volunteers to help organize and carry out this event.
We also have several other opportunities for volunteering in 2012:
· Survivor Kits: We want everyone who is diagnosed with ovarian cancer to have access to the resources they need. We are partnering with St. Vincent’s New Outlook to create and distribute Survivor Kits. We need a few volunteers to take an hour or two at least every quarter to put these kits together.
· Turn Arkansas Teal: I have a dream of seeing teal everywhere I turn during the month of September. The first step in achieving this dream is placing teal “piggy banks” in local stores and restaurants during the month of September for people to donate their spare change. I encourage you to begin planning now for the number of banks you want and asking for permission for leaving them. You will be responsible for gathering the money too. Not only do we need people in September to pass out the piggy banks and gather the money, we need at least two people working on this project now to ensure that this event runs smoothly.
· Riverfest: This one of the state’s largest community events and the perfect opportunity for us to reach thousands of women! We need two people to begin looking into different avenues of being involved in this event.
· Health Fairs: As in the past, we need volunteers to pass out literature and answer a few basic questions at different health fairs throughout the year. You can sit for an hour or a whole day. The choice is yours. We are currently scheduling volunteers for Tuesday, March 13 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Little Rock.
· Bookmarks: These mini-brochures have a great potential of reaching thousands of people. We already have someone in charge of placing bookmarks in the Central Arkansas Library System and Saline County libraries, but we need volunteers for other libraries. If you live in a different area, we would love for you to deliver some bookmarks to your local public library.
· Educational Brochures: I want to encourage you to commit to supplying your doctor (whether a general practitioner, a GYN, or your dentist) with our Educational Brochures. We will supply you with the brochures and display rack, you just need to go by the office once a month and replace the brochures.

AROVCC is currently seeking professional, amateur…, or if painting is just your hobby artists, that are willing to donate a piece of artwork for our organizations only yearly fundraiser: Artist For Ovaries. This event will be held in a beautiful space above Bill Street Pub (614 President Clinton Avenue), Friday, September 24 starting at 5:30. Tickets are $20, each submitting artist will receive free tickets. Alcohol will be provided by Glazers Distributors.
Any and all mediums are accepted. Entry Forms are due Friday, August 23rd and the artwork is due Saturday, September 11. Once you enter, we will be in contact with you in regards to further details.

The AROVCC will be attending “Linking the Community to Health Services” healthfair this Saturday. We would love to see you there, or for you to send friends and family to stop by and get information on ovarian cancer.
The collaboration of the faith community with several health organizations raise awareness in the African-American community. First Baptist Church will collaborate with Arkansas Cancer Coalition, BreastCare, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association for this years’ event. Education, physical activity and preventive screenings will be the focus.
“Linking the Community to Health Services” healthfair will take place at First Baptist Church in North Little Rock on Saturday, May 15, 2010 from 10:30 – 2:00 p.m. First Baptist Church is located at 811 Scipio Jones Drive in North Little Rock and William L. Robinson is the pastor.
The AROVCC Board members and committee members have been very busy preparing for a wonderful new year. A few things that have been lined up include:
- Printing of our own ovarian educational brochure
- Distribution of the brochure to all Arkansas Area Health Education Centers and Arkansas Department of Health OB/Gyn offices. (AHEC’s are the primary educational outreach effort of UAMS and the principal means of decentralizing medical and other health professions education throughout the state)
- Preparation and planning for our 4th Annual Awareness Rally, 3rd Annual Survivors Luncheon (August 31) and 2nd Annual Artists for Ovaries (Sept 24).
Most recently we have had the opportunity to participate in Lilly’s Dim Sum Then Some ”One Day, One Community” – One Monday night a month, they feature a local charity and give 15% of their proceeds of the day to the featured group. Thank you all to everyone that came out and supported the AROVCC!!
We are so proud and honored to say that the first annual Artist For Ovaries was a wonderful success. Thank you to all of the outstanding local artists that generously donated their works of art for our cause! We could not have done it without them. Also a huge thank you to our bidders! With over 175 people in attendance we were in awe with the wonderful turn out.

Our Awareness Rally and Survivor’s Luncheon was a great success!!
We had over 150 women (and men) in attendance at the Survivor’s Luncheon. Our response from survivors, supporters and even those there honoring the beautiful women we have lost was a true blessing. The Coalition would like to thank everyone for their support. We are making wonderful strides because of you!
Because of the outstanding participation, we have been able to raise enough money to help with Artist For Ovaries AND a new venture for us… Girls Night Out.
(Girls Night Out is a local event sponsored by several local radio stations. “A night of fun with the girls. Event offers shopping, food samples, Free gift bags to the first 1,000 women, prizes every 30 minutes, purse exchange, cooking demonstrations, dance demonstrations, free massages, and live music featuring Safety Suit and Jesse James.” For this event we are going to insert information about the signs & symptoms of ovarian cancer and about our upcoming events in the Free Gift bags being distributed. This allows us the opportunity to possibly reach over 1,000 women in one setting!!!
We have been very fortunate to receive increased publicity about our group; therefore, about the signs & symptoms of ovarian cancer. These opportunities have allowed us to help individuals seeking advice about their signs & symptoms, knowing that we have helped to possibly save a life. They have also allowed us to gain several new volunteers. (We are always looking for energetic positive people ready to work.)

*This space is graciously being donated by Courtyard Marriott. It is because of gracious donations such as this that we can focus our funds on education and awareness.
The support for ovarian cancer managed to draw out Mr. Sunshine for a few hours on Saturday May, 9 – which allowed for a successful First Annual Hope Hike (Lisette C. Johnson Memorial Hike for Ovarian Cancer Education and Research) With over 60 hikers in attendance and over 100 virtual hikers, the Hike was able to raise over $2000. The money will be used for ovarian cancer research and education throughout the state of Arkansas.
Lisette’s family was in attendance and were truly touched by the support given to fight this deadly disease. Pictured below is a few of the local survivors in attendance.
